This is a pencil drawing, graphite and prismacolor, on champagne colored drawing paper. Original size is 8.75x12.5, but I've cropped it to a 2 to 3 ratio. It was scanned, however, at 768 dpi, so I should be able to print it at over 24 x 36 inches.
The source photo was derived from a People Magazine image, however, the image was of Johnny Depp in NORMAL mode, not Captain Jack Sparrow mode. So the hat, hair, beads, facial hair, eye fatigue, and shirt are all individually realized.
This was sort of my focus of doing this drawing; up until now, all of my portraits have been verbatim copies with no "creational" aspects. With this image, I hoped to integrate the standard portrait skills with being able to imagine lighting and shading on surfaces that existed only in my head. That proved quite a bitch, though I'm satisfied with how it looks finished.
After the drawing was finished, scanned, and pieced back together, levels were adjusted, and saturation tweaked, so I was able to bring an almost sepia look out of the champagne paper. I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out, though I do sort of wish I'd spent more time on it. I was nearing the 10 hour mark though, so I just decided I was happy as was.
Criticism, as always, is appreciated.
